RESS RELEASE

INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL FOR CHILDREN FILEM’ON

From 30th of October till 6th of November 2016

Brussels & Ghent – Since many years, 10 to be exact, Filem’on throws his international children’s film festival in Brussels. Today, this small festival has grown into quite an event that only chooses the best, most original and adventurous films for children. During this autumn break, Filem’on will be showing films from all lengths and genres in theatres and cultural houses through all of Brussels… and for the first time, in Ghent as well!

What’s the theme for this 10th (!) anniversary edition? Music! To celebrate, we will show more than 140 films for children between 2 and 16 years old. Feature films, documentaries and, of course, short films. But we will also host special Ciné concerts, visual performances and creative film workshops. Children from Brussels ánd an international jury of children will pick the winners. Many directors will also attend the festival to present their film.

For the “Kids” and “Teens” competition, we have a wide selection of European and global films from Thailand “Buffalo Rider”, Vietnam “Yellow flowers on green grass”, Israel “Abulele”, Korea “The world of us”, the Philippines “Blanka” and Chili “Rara”. A lot of these films have won awards on other prestigious festivals worldwide. The Indian film “Ottaal” for example (Best Youth Film Berlinale), the Serbian film “Enclave” (nominee ECFA Award) and the French animated film “La jeune fille sans mains” (Grand Prix Annecy). The documentary “Not without us” and the le docu-fiction “Land of Light” were made by Syrian refugees, and have been selected for the important Max Ophüls Prize. This way, Filem’on shows his heart for children all over the world. We even have a special international children’s jury for this edition from Germany and Russia.

For the teenagers in our audience, we have a fine selection of brand new and original animated films, like “Molly Monster”, “Kiwi & Strit”, “Snipp, Snapp, Snut”, “Julius in Winterland”, “Ma vie de courgette”,...

This year, we also celebrate our own country, Belgium, by dedicating a whole day to films for children by Belgian film schools and production houses
Kask hogeschool, Ritcs, La Cambre, luca school of arts, Insas, haute école albert jacquard, Graphoui, A private view, Loupiote, Vivifilm, Zorobabel, S.O.I.L THURISTAR, De doos producties, ...

The Canadian film “La guerre de Tuques” will take you back down memory lane. It’s a 3D remake of a production of the ‘80’s. The director just passed away a few weeks ago, and so the screening will be a respectful homage. We will also honor the memory of David Bowie, by showing the great “Labyrinth” in the Cinémathek.

The festival will end its party with a weekend filled with music for the smallest members of our audience. The icing on the cake will be the breathtaking visual spectacle “Behind the telescopes” at Bozar, with music by ea Philip Glass, in collaboration with the music festival Big Bang.

Because what would a birthday be without a little music?
